More About Citation S/II

The Citation S/II, short for Super II, is a remarkable evolution of Cessna’s all-time best-selling business jet. This enhanced version offers increased capacity and swifter performance compared to its predecessor, all while preserving its renowned reputation for simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

In an era when the aviation industry was captivated by a race to produce the heaviest, most complex, and challenging-to-operate jets, the Citation II defied the norm with its straightforward systems and efficient manufacturing techniques. This bold departure from the status quo substantially reduced operational and acquisition expenses. Its resounding success in prioritizing simplicity and economy revolutionized private jet design trends across the industry.

The Citation S/II is a standout for its ability to comfortably accommodate up to eight passengers on journeys spanning up to 2,300 miles (equivalent to 2,000 nautical miles). It achieves a maximum cruise speed of 404 knots, thanks to its two Pratt & Whitney JT15D-4B high-bypass fan engines, each delivering an impressive 2,500 pounds of thrust during takeoff. This represents a significant upgrade in high-altitude thrust compared to the Citation II. The S/II climbs to its cruising altitude at a rate slightly exceeding 3,000 feet per minute and reaches a maximum service ceiling of 43,000 feet.

As previously highlighted, the Citation S/II stands out for its user-friendly design, most notably in its cockpit. The cockpit features an intuitive, logically organized layout that facilitates ease of operation. Boasting an impressive 340-degree visibility, it provides straightforward controls for critical systems such as fuel management and de-icing. Furthermore, the Citation S/II can be expertly piloted by a single aviator, reducing travel and operating costs while enhancing flight planning flexibility.

This jet’s exceptional handling characteristics are largely attributable to its employment of a straight wing design. This not only mitigates Dutch rolls resulting from strong gusts but also optimizes lift per angle-of-attack increment, making takeoffs and landings effortless. The S/II fine-tuned its wing design to further minimize drag, encompassing modifications to the wing root, engine nacelle, and pylon areas.

While the systems aboard the Citation S/II are indeed straightforward, they are by no means lacking in safety features. This aircraft is certified under FAR Part 25 airworthiness standards, the same standards mandatory for large airliners such as the Boeing 747.

The Citation series marked a transformative shift for the private jet industry, fundamentally altering it for the better. This impact was so profound that the president of Cessna was bestowed with the prestigious Collier Trophy, a national award recognizing significant achievements in aviation advancement.
